Period of Popularity

The term 'Otaku' first appeared in Japan in the 1970s. It was introduced to Korea in 1989 through a KBS current affairs program. Its popularity truly began to grow in the late 1990s after the opening of Japanese popular culture, leading to an increase in people enjoying Japanese animation. It spread further with the proliferation of the internet in the 2000s. From the mid-2010s, a more positive image began to form due to media exposure and celebrities' 'deokming-out' (coming out as a fan). Particularly in the early 2020s, the success of Japanese animated films in Korea during the COVID-19 pandemic further brought otaku culture into the mainstream spotlight.

Meaning

'Otaku (おたく)' is originally a Japanese term. In a narrow sense, it refers to a person obsessively devoted to subculture content such as Japanese animation, manga, and games. In a broader sense, it designates someone who has a deep interest and specialized knowledge in a specific field or hobby and pursues it passionately. In Korea, this meaning has expanded, and the term 'deokhu' or the suffix '-deok' (e.g., 축덕 (chuk-deok, football fan), 역덕 (yeok-deok, history fan), 아이돌 덕후 (idol deokhu, idol fan)) is widely used. Initially, it carried strong negative connotations such as a lack of social skills and escapism, but its usage has gradually broadened to a value-neutral meaning, expressing deep affection for a particular hobby.

Target Audience

Primarily used to describe young people deeply engrossed in specific hobbies, it is also widely used by people of all ages and genders, regardless of sex. Especially since the 2010s, expressions like 'deokhu certification' or 'deokming-out' are common in female-dominated online communities, and many ordinary people with a passion for a specific field refer to themselves as 'deokhu'.

Usage Examples

  • "I'm a train otaku, so I can recognize all types of trains just by looking at them."
  • "Collecting 'bias' merchandise is popular among idol deokhu these days."
  • "That friend is a history deokhu, so they even got a Level 1 in the Korean History Proficiency Test."
  • "The new subculture mobile game collaboration event is gaining popularity with the 'Good, very lively' meme."
  • "My friend came out as a 'deokhu,' and it turned out they were a huge anime deokhu."

Usage Precautions

While the meaning of 'Otaku' has expanded and its perception is improving, it can still carry negative connotations. Derivatives like '씹덕' (ssipdeok) or '혼모노' (honmono) have strong derogatory and contemptuous meanings, so caution should be exercised when using them. Excessive obsession can evoke a negative image of social inadequacy or escapism, and some people may even perceive it as an insult. Furthermore, excessive immersion in a specific hobby can become a source of conflict in dating or married life, and it can lead to misunderstandings in social or interpersonal relationships. Therefore, it is important to consider the situation and the other person when using the term.
