It began to gain popularity when the phrase "안 생겨요" (An Saeng-gyeo-yo), meaning "It won't happen" or "You won't get one," resonated strongly in a comment on a high school student's post about relationship worries. By 2010, it became widely known after appearing in a beverage advertisement for a pharmaceutical company and being used by Yoo Hee-yeol on a radio program. However, it is now considered an outdated joke and is largely obsolete, rarely used outside of specific online communities.

ASKY is an acronym formed by taking the first letters of the Romanized Korean phrase "An Saeng-gyeo-yo" (안 생겨요). It was primarily used to express the desperate situation of a man who believes he will never have a girlfriend, similar in context to the English "forever alone" meme. A characteristic pattern of the meme involves offering seemingly hopeful advice to someone, only to conclude with "안 생겨요," creating a sense of despair. Variations of this meme include "GRD ASKY," which is short for "Geureoda An Saeng-gyeo-yo" (그러다 안 생겨요, meaning "Then it won't happen"). For married couples, the phrase could be playfully altered to "Ae Saeng-gyeo-yo" (애 생겨요, "You'll have a baby") or "Geureoda Ae Saeng-gyeo-yo" ("Then you'll have a baby").
