This meme began to gain widespread recognition on September 29, 2012, when G-Dragon of Big Bang appeared on the MBC variety show 'Infinite Challenge' in the special episode 'Infinite Company - New Employee'. At that time, G-Dragon popularized the phrase by saying "Haengsyo, everyone Haengsyo" to Manager Yoo Jae-suk, which became a big topic and was widely used from that point on.

'Haengsyo' (행쇼) is a neologism that is a shortened form of '행복하십시오' (haengbokhasipsio), meaning 'Be happy' or 'Wishing you happiness.' While G-Dragon introduced it on Infinite Challenge with a meaning of encouragement, it was originally also used with a slightly sarcastic nuance, like 'Be happy, then!' (행복하쇼), directed at someone excessively boasting about their happiness. The ending '-syo' (쇼) is characteristic of a shortened, informal speech style, so using it in a polite context might feel a bit awkward.

Influenced by 'Infinite Challenge,' a program that enjoyed nationwide popularity, and G-Dragon, who was a top idol at the time, 'Haengsyo' was used by a wide age range, from teenagers to people in their 30s. It was particularly popular among the younger generation who were sensitive to pop culture in the early 2010s, and it was familiar to both men and women.
