Period of Popularity

This meme gained significant popularity with the release of Blizzard's popular game Overwatch in 2016. It spread rapidly, especially due to the ultimate ability voice line of the hero Genji, which became a mondegreen. McCree's (now Cassidy) ultimate ability voice line also became widely known alongside the game's success. It enjoyed peak popularity from 2016 to 2017.

Meaning

'Ryoo Seung-ryong Gimojji!' originated from a mondegreen phenomenon where the Japanese voice line "Ryūjin no ken wo kurae!" (竜神の剣を喰らえ! - "Taste the blade of the Dragon God!") spoken by Overwatch hero Genji when activating his ultimate ability 'Dragonblade,' sounded like the Korean phrase "Ryoo Seung-ryong Gimojji!" At the time, it gained even greater traction by combining with the popular phrase 'Ang Gimotti' used by AfreecaTV streamer Chulgu. This was a complex result of the latter part of the voice line being muffled amidst in-game sound effects and tension, combined with the brain's tendency to associate familiar Korean and Japanese words.

'The sunset falls...' is a voice line spoken by Overwatch hero Cassidy (formerly McCree) when using his ultimate ability 'Deadeye.' It's a line that signals the dramatic moment just before annihilating enemies, leaving a strong impression in the game and becoming popular. This line is the Korean translation of the English original "It's high noon," characterized by its uniquely slow and weighty pronunciation.

Pronunciation

  • Ryoo Seung-ryong Gimojji!: Sounds like "Roo-sung-ryong Gee-moh-jee!"
  • The sunset falls... (Korean: Seogyangi Jinda...): Sounds like "Suhk-yahng-ee Jin-dah..."

Target Audience

Primarily popular among gamers in their late teens to 30s who played Overwatch. However, due to the game's immense popularity, it also became widely recognized by general internet users who didn't play the game, making it familiar across all age groups and to both men and women.
