Pronunciation

King Ki-hoon Gwan-ryeon Yu-haeng-eo (pronounced 'King Kee-hoon Gwan-ryeon Yoo-haeng-uh'). This title refers to popular phrases associated with the streamer King Ki-hoon, with '버억' (Beo-eok, pronounced 'Buh-eok') being the most prominent example.

Period of Popularity

The 'Beo-eok' meme began to be used by internet broadcaster King Ki-hoon in November 2018. It gained a positive response on YouTube and Facebook, becoming widely popular around March to April 2019. However, its usage gradually decreased from around 2023, and it is now considered an almost obsolete meme.

Meaning

'버억' is an onomatopoeic sound used as an interjection right before eating, or to express the sound of opening one's mouth wide to take a large mouthful of food. It was sometimes used as a verb, like '버억하자' (beo-eok-ha-ja), meaning 'let's eat.' This popular phrase originated when King Ki-hoon advised his friend Hambaek to make a 'beok' sound during a mukbang (eating broadcast). Hambaek then adapted it into phrases like '버억' and '칙칙폭폭 버억' (chik-chik-pok-pok beo-eok), which King Ki-hoon subsequently adopted and popularized. King Ki-hoon is known to have used '벅' as an interjection even before this, for example, in phrases like '담배 벅 피러 가자' (dam-bae beok pi-reo ga-ja), meaning 'let's go smoke a cigarette.'

Target Audience

It was primarily popular among students. The phrase 'Even if you don't know King Ki-hoon, you know Beo-eok' illustrates its particular popularity among teenagers and young adults in their 10s and early 20s.

Usage Examples

  • Used by shouting "버억!" right before eating or when taking a large bite of food.
  • "점심 버억하러 가자!" (Let's go "beo-eok" lunch! / Let's go eat lunch!)
  • Various adapted expressions include "칙칙폭폭 버억" (chik-chik-pok-pok beo-eok), "와칸다 포에버억" (Wakanda Foreveo-eok), "왓더 버억" (What the beo-eok), and "스타버억" (Starbeo-eok, a play on Starbucks).

Usage Cautions

Although 'Beo-eok' was once very popular, its indiscriminate use in public places or being forced as a meme led to negative perceptions among some people, who found it childish and noisy. In particular, its similarity to '꺼억' (kkeo-eok), a burping sound, sometimes caused discomfort. As it is now an outdated meme, it is advisable to consider the situation and the reactions of others when using it.
