The Korean "러닝 크루" is a direct transliteration of the English words "Running Crew." Therefore, an English speaker would pronounce it as "Run-ning Crew" (IPA: /ˈrʌnɪŋ kruː/).

"Running Crew" is a compound term combining "running" and "crew," referring to a group of people who run together. Initially, it carried a strong positive image as an exercise group for health. However, from 2024 onwards, its meaning has shifted, acquiring negative connotations. It began to be used sarcastically to criticize groups that, rather than focusing on the exercise itself, prioritize dating, obsess over expensive gear, cause inconvenience to pedestrians by running in large groups, or even engage in irregular participation (like "뻐꾸기" or "cuckoo" behavior) in running competitions, often highlighted by their use of smartwatch recording apps and group 인증샷 (proof shots). This negative perception has led to the coining of new terms like "Run-rani" (런라니) and "Tte-ning" (떼닝), likening them to inconsiderate drivers such as "Ja-rani" (자라니, referring to reckless cyclists) and "Kick-rani" (킥라니, referring to reckless electric scooter riders).

While "running crews" as clubs or associations have existed for a long time, the term began to gain traction as a meme among the general public around 2023-2024. Its spread was particularly fueled by a running craze among the MZ generation following the COVID-19 pandemic. However, by 2024, certain behaviors of running crews were frequently cited as nuisances on social media and online communities, leading to a widespread negative perception. In 2025, there were movements to curb such inconsiderate behavior in response to these criticisms, but the issue has not been fully resolved.

Initially, the running trend that popularized the concept was prominent among the MZ generation. However, the meme itself, particularly its critical and negative connotations, has spread widely across the general public, especially within online communities and social media platforms.

The term "Running Crew" embodies a significant shift in public perception, transforming from a positive descriptor of a healthy activity into a critical and often derisive label.
