The 'Miruni Incident' began to gain popularity following an event that occurred on June 29, 2024, at YouTube FanFest Korea. Subsequently, related videos and challenges spread throughout July and August, gaining significant traction, and continued to be actively consumed until September 2024.

The 'Miruni Incident' is an internet meme referring to an event where comedian Lee Je-gyu performed his song 'Miruni' on stage at YouTube FanFest Korea 2024 and tried to get the audience to sing along. However, due to the song's low recognition, no one responded, creating a very awkward atmosphere (colloquially known as 'gapbunssa'). Lee Je-gyu himself combined this situation with the 'People who know/People who don't know' meme and named it the 'Miruni Incident' or 'Miruni Event,' leading to its spread as a meme. While this meme initially referred to embarrassing and awkward situations, it paradoxically became an opportunity to explosively increase the recognition of the song 'Miruni'.

Primarily used by young people, ranging from late teens to their 30s, who actively consume internet and YouTube content. In particular, those who empathize with awkward or embarrassing social situations, or enjoy transforming them into humor, frequently use this meme.
