Sarangseureowo Challenge (pronounced sah-rahng-soo-ruh-woh Challenge)

The 'Sarangseureowo Challenge' began gaining popularity in October 2023 when a Japanese producer created new challenge choreography. Subsequently, a challenge video by a Chinese girl named 'Luolan' went viral, leading to its global spread. It officially started trending in Korea from December 2023.

This meme is a dance challenge that utilizes Kim Jong-kook's 2005 hit song 'Sarangseureowo' (meaning 'Lovely'). The core idea is to follow newly created choreography that matches the original song's cheerful and lovely atmosphere. A distinctive feature is repeating specific movements in sync with the lyrics, "From head to toe, everything about you is lovely."

This meme gained significant popularity among the younger generation, particularly teenagers and young adults in their early to mid-twenties, leading them to recognize Kim Jong-kook's 'Sarangseureowo' as a signature song. Furthermore, since the original song was widely loved by all age groups, from preschoolers to those over 70, at the time of its release, the challenge's popularity has made it a meme enjoyed and relatable across all generations.

The 'Sarangseureowo Challenge' is actively used on short-form video platforms such as YouTube Shorts, Instagram Reels, and TikTok. Many K-POP idols and celebrities have participated in the challenge, showcasing videos with their unique personalities, while ordinary people also share videos of themselves performing the challenge choreography with friends, lovers, or family. The challenge choreography is as follows: First, poke twice to the left with both hands while kicking twice to the right with the right foot, hopping twice like a rabbit. Then, in the opposite direction, poke twice to the right with both hands while kicking twice to the left with the right foot, hopping twice like a rabbit. Finally, it concludes with a movement where both hands have only the index finger raised, shaking them back and forth, and wiggling the hips.
